Tell us a little about you and your sweetheart. How did you two meet?
Eric and I met through the power of Twitter! He wrote a blog post about his experience at a Kevin Smith Q&A in Dallas, and I re-tweeted it because I really related to it! After several direct messages we realized we both had our own local podcasts. Our first conversation is a recorded podcast episode on his show! In that episode we also realized that by fate we were sitting in the same row at the same Kevin Smith Q&A. We’ve been together ever since!
What was the moment you knew you had fallen in love?
If both us being in love with Kevin Smith, film, and all things geek culture wasn’t enough to know—I’d say it was when hard times really hit both of our families as well as each other. The willingness to be there for each other during any hard times completely and without judgment really proved true love was there.
How did he propose?
As much as I fantasized about a fancy proposal, I was really surprised and completely content with how Eric did it. To sum it up, it was a nice, quiet, and sweet proposal without anyone else around at home (or so I thought). It was one of those perfect moment situations. I definitely didn’t see it coming. We shared a nice laugh when his housemate walked out of his room immediately after he proposed!
What was the first thing you checked off your wedding-planning list?
Besides planning the date, the dress was the first thing I aimed for. I had absolutely no intentions of planning the style of the wedding around the dress but it happened that way after I purchased it. I couldn’t have been happier. Everything just flowed together so well!
When you started shopping for wedding dresses, what did you have in mind?
I honestly wasn’t sure what type of dress I wanted. I knew that I had envisioned wearing something with a kind of lace or embellishment. I have always been a fan of A-line styles since they always worked for my body type. I ended up choosing a dress that I never thought I would ever wear in a million years. I know—it sounds cliché—but I promise, ladies, it could happen to you! Being open minded to options really does wonders!
Who is your style icon?
I am absolutely in love with Ashley Graham. She is a gorgeous model, designer, author, and body activist. I am pro-anyone that is all about the body positivity. She makes curvy look so good and really gave me the confidence a few years ago to be proud of my curves. She is everything! From style to personality as a person, she is an IT girl.
Who did you invite to help you shop for gowns?
Since taking a huge crowd with me has never been my style, I took my mother and my stepfather.
Which Maggie Sottero Designs gown did you choose?
I chose the Sottero & Midgley Allen dress (purchased at StarDust Celebrations in Plano, TX). I ended up trying two different MSD styles on and actually had a hard time picking between the two. The embellishments on the bodice of the Allen dress are so timeless and go perfectly with the modest neckline & open back. I had never seen anything so well put together with the beading and Swarovski crystals! My eyes definitely lit up when the stylist brought this beautiful beaded and tulle ball gown for me to try on. It was also a plus to see mom cry after I tried it on. I definitely didn’t get emotional but I thought to myself in this dress “Wow, I’m actually a bride. This is really happening!”
Speaking of pretty dresses, tell us about any gown you’ve worn or admired in your life… a prom dress? A family member’s wedding dress? A style from a movie?
The only other dress I’ve ever worn that I fell in love with immediately was my prom dress. I was always really inspired by Audrey Hepburn in the movie “Sabrina” and found the perfect dress that embodied that!
How did you create the “look and feel” of your wedding?
Our venue was very rustic (we live in Texas). So, because my dress was so glamorous I decided to work with both rustic themes and glamorous themes. I wanted everything thing to be simple yet beautiful. I pulled inspiration from all types of websites, apps, and photography. Key word here is “inspiration”—I really tried my best not to replicate something else. Sometimes it’s hard not to do but with my mom being a florist we got super creative together.
What was the most surprising part of your wedding day?
The most surprising part of the day was to see so many family members from all over the country attend the wedding! Getting the opportunity to mingle with everyone can be really difficult when there is so much to do at the wedding, but we made it happen. We were so grateful to have all of our friends and family from all over share our special day with us.

What was the most magical part of your wedding day?
The most magical part of our day is a two-part answer. First were the vows! I don’t normally tear up but once I saw Eric tear up while I started reading my vows, I kind of lost it. His vows were so perfect and everything else was a blur. The only thing in focus during that moment was the two of us. The second was a private moment we shared with each other outside to take a couple of night shots with our photographers. Even though they were taking pictures, I am glad they separated us from everyone even just for five minutes to pose for some unique photos. It was a nice moment to enjoy the evening weather outside and just hold each other in privacy away from everyone.
What was the funniest part of your wedding day?
The funniest part of our wedding day was playing the shoe questionnaire game. It was great to get everyone involved in an activity together and apparently all of our answers were hilarious. It was especially funny when one of the bridesmaids who were asking the questions let one of the guests’ kids ask the questions. It was quite entertaining to put it lightly!
What do you think your guests loved most about your wedding day?
We hope they loved all of it! However, I think if you asked any of them they might say the dancing. We both love to dance and made sure that there was plenty of it at the ceremony!
What advice do you have for brides tackling their wedding budget?
I would suggest not stressing too much about the little details. Take care of yourself the week leading up to the big day so you can focus on your relaxation. Enjoying the little moments leading up to the wedding as well as the day of is so important. Everything will flow nicely once you can relax.
What advice do you have for brides choosing their wedding party?
Ours wasn’t too small or too large. If you’re having doubts about anything, I think it’s best to discuss them with your future spouse. This really made a big difference and helped us make the best decisions.
What advice do you have for future brides overall?
Enjoy this beautiful experience. Lavish in it and allow yourself to feel glamorous through the whole process. You and your spouse are committing your lives together, so celebrate it. Live in the moment and surround yourself during this important time with loving, caring, and helpful people. Having a support system really helps!
