What Should Bridesmaid Dresses Look Like?

PC: Taylor York

Bridesmaid dresses are completely up to the bride! Although, traditionally, a bridesmaid wears the bride’s chosen wedding colors in a floor-length dress. Some brides choose to have all their bridesmaids match in both color and silhouette, while others have a set color but let their bridesmaids choose the style. A trend that has been growing in popularity recently is a bride having all her bridesmaids wearing different hues of the same color in different styles or even just giving them a range of colors and styles to choose from for a mismatched look.

We’ve also seen brides giving their bridesmaids a certain vibe to go off of like a “pastel floral sundress” or “garden tea party” and having their bridesmaids interpret that and choose a dress for themselves based on the aesthetic. We would recommend providing options, a Pinterest board, or some other inspo for your bridesmaids to go off of (and maybe have them get it approved by you before they purchase!) if this is your plan. Whatever your bridal aesthetic, you have plenty of options!

What Color is the Mother of the Bride Supposed to Wear?

PC: The Rennies | Ross Alexander

The mother of the bride is typically dressed in a color that is complementary to the wedding party but doesn’t necessarily match perfectly so she doesn’t get confused for a bridesmaid. A lot of brides choose to dress their mother in the same color as their bridal party, but in a slightly darker hue to distinguish them. They may also choose to go simpler for the bridesmaids, and then put the mother of the bride in something a little more shimmery, or in an accent color in another part of the wedding palette.

Ultimately, though, what the bride’s mother wears is totally up to her and the bride!

What to Wear as a Wedding Guest

Dress up! Most weddings are not casual events, so make sure you wear something nice! Stay away from anything overly short or revealing, as well as the colors white, red, or black unless you’ve been specifically asked to wear them. You can check your invitation or the couple’s wedding website if they have one to see if they have a specific dress code picked out for their big day. Here’s a quick rundown on how to dress for different events:

  • Black tie: We would suggest wearing a very nice floor-length evening gown or fancy cocktail dress. Pair your look with nice accessories like jewelry, heels, shawls, and clutches. Nice suits and tuxedos are also the go-tos for black tie events.
  • Formal: This is a step down from black-tie, but still very nice. We would still suggest a floor-length or nice cocktail dress and a nice suit if you’re attending a formal event. Tuxedos are not necessary, though.
  • Semi-formal: Think “Sunday best” when it comes to semi-formal. It is a good balance between comfort and style. An elegant knee-length sundress with wedges and simple jewelry is perfectly appropriate for a semi-formal event. You could also wear a suit with a simple button-down shirt and tie.
  • Cocktail: At an event that requires cocktail attire, a tea-length or knee-length, or midi dress are all totally appropriate. A gala-worthy dress or mini-skirt is not in line with cocktail attire, but pretty much anything elegant that falls in between is fair game. A relaxed suit and tie are typically another appropriate choice! Steer clear of jeans, T-shirts, or anything you wouldn’t wear out to a nice brunch or tea party with friends.
